Splurge vs. Bargin: Eye Makeup Remover

Taking off eye makeup with just regular soap and water doesn’t cut it, so a great eye makeup remover is a must. The first one I tried (as a suggestion from my mom) was Lancome’s BI-FACIL. Eye makeup removal with this is a snap–I usually put some on a q-tip after shaking the bottle to mix the 2 solutions, and everything comes off in one swipe. However at $26.00 (4.2 oz.), it wasn’t always in my budget.

Next up, I tried Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. It caught my eye because just like Lancome’s BI-FACIL, it had 2 solutions that needed to be shaken before use.  The $7.99 (5.5 oz.) price tag didn’t hurt either! I found that Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Makeup Remover worked just as well as the BI-FACIL.

Now last night, I was about to pick up another bottle of Neutrogena, when I noticed the CVS brand Oil-Free Make-Up Remover right next to it. Since it looked very similar to Neutrogena, I decided to give it a whirl since it was $5.99 (6.4 oz.). And to my surprise, it worked just as well as the Neutrogena and Lancome.

CVS Oil Free Make-Up Remover is the clear winner here with a great product at a low price.

CVS Adds Essie To Their Beauty Lineup

Making a quick run into CVS keeps getting harder as they add more top shelf beauty brands.

Today I noticed they had my favorite nail polish brand, Essie, displayed. Although the color selection was skimpy…it’s a start!

Report from The Makeup Show NYC 2011: The Pros’ Favorite Products

The sixth annual Makeup Show NYC brought together the biggest brand names and best talent in the beauty industry for two days of inspiration, education and community. beautypress stopped by to discover new products, network with professionals to hear the inside tips and techniques directly from the best in the cosmetics business.

In addition to techniques—with well-attended seminars taught by make up artists including David Klasfeld (OCC Makeup), Dell Ashley (Yves Saint Laurent) and David Hernandez (Make Up for Ever)—the show offered more than 70 product companies the opportunity connect with make up artists. Which products sold out during the show? What received raves? Here’s our round up of makeup artists’ favorites, a combination of classic products and new entries:

Make Up For Ever introduced a vibrant addition to its Aqua range – Aqua Liner. This highly pigmented new collection of liquid eyeliners in a bold assortment of 15 colors is 100% waterproof and stays put even in the most extreme environments.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics showed several new colors in its Lip Tar line, including show sell-out Safety Orange and Beta (a bright orange) as well as the classic colors most favored by make-up artists: NSFW (the “perfect red”), Memento (Neutral), and Hush (Nude). Lip Tar combines the longevity of a lipstick with the ease of application of a gloss. This intense, highly pigmented layer of color offers an ultra long wearing demi-matte finish that never feels heavy.

Making its first appearance at the Makeup Show on the East Coast, Yves Saint Laurent presented its best selling Rouge Pur Couture- a lipstick that doubles as a lip stain, with a satiny finish that dazzles. Additionally, make-up artists love the light-diffusing properties of Teint Radiance foundation, ideal for creating a radiant look on mature skin.

Emmy® Award winning makeup artist Melanie Mills formulated her GLEAM Body Radiance non-transferable body foundation out of necessity for her makeup design on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” The just-launched product luminizes and perfects the skin, giving it a soft, velvety finish. The transfer-resistant formula stays put on the skin, so your clothes stay clean.

Sue Devitt showcased a range of color cosmetics “with benefits” that nourish and treat the skin. Among the line’s best selling products is the Eye Intensifier Pencil, a velvety formulation that glides on extra smooth for fool-proof application. Anti-aging ingredients lock in moisture and expand and contract with facial movements to prevent creasing.

Perennial French favorite Embryolisse was on hand, quickly selling out of its coveted Lait Crème Concentré, the “industry’s secret,” used by many make up artists and professional make up lines as their go-to moisturizer, primer, filler and even as a make up remover.

In addition to the bustling booths of MAC and Inglot, some of the indie brands on hand were selling out too:

Rocker-Model Theo Kogan’s Armour Beauty showcased six new shades of its naturally based lip gloss lines, with colors named after songs, pop icons and rock stars. Among the standouts for creating an intense editorial look: Femme Fatale, a black opaque in combination with Grace - Armour’s new, vibrant magenta shade (named for Grace Jones, of course).

Jao’s new line of Outdoor Products, feature a special blend of plant oils with prove insect repellant properties (without the unpleasant “bug spray” smell). The line features Patio Oil, a moisturizer with 20% concentration of Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus; Outscent, a light perfume with woodsy and citrus notes; and lastly, Patio Oil Moisture Mist, a calming, refreshing formula that keeps the bugs away.

The Makeup Show NYC was held from May 15-16, 2011 at the Metropolitan Pavillion. For more information, contact Melody O’Flaherty melody@melodyjoypr.com or +1.949.292.8087

Beauty Secrets From Bravo’s Real Housewives

Bravo TV’s hit series Real Housewives is my favorite reality TV indulgence. Fabulous clothes, cars, homes, and lifestyles (not to mention drama) have millions of women glued to the TV each season.
While they have the money for the best hair and makeup people,  I was curious as to what beauty products or secrets they swear by. A little digging and I found the beauty routines of 6 of my favorite housewives.
Kyle Richards, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills
Known for her thick shiny tresses, Richards shares her beauty must haves in a Bravo blog:
“I use Pantene on my hair. They changed the formula recently throwing me for a loop, but I’ve always used their deep clarifying shampoo and heaviest conditioner. If they don’t come up with one as good as the one I used to use, I may have to make my own!
My favorite make-up:
Best foundation for evening: Make Up Forever High
Def foundation. For day, I use Laura Mercier tinted sunblock. The best!
Lip gloss: Mac color “Viva Glam 5″,  Mac color “Enchantress”, Lipfusion Color “Sun”
Best mascara: Loreal Voluminous. LOVE.”
Gretchen Rossi, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills
Rossi is another housewife known for her beautiful hair. How does she gets those bouncy loose curls? Hot Rollers! She puts them in after blow drying to add great body.
Gretchen also has her own line of makeup called, Gretchen Christine Beaute. She shares how to get replicate her go-to classic makeup look on her blog.
Cynthia Bailey, Real Housewives of Atlanta
The gorgeous model shares her 5 Fall Beauty must haves with NY PIX:
• Kevin Aucoin Concealer
• Beauty Blender Sponge
• Dermha Moisturizing Creme
• Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey
• Weleda Skin Food
Bethenny Frankel, Real Housewives
Frankel, a spokesperson for Drugstore.com, shared with Stylist.com what’s in her beauty bag:
  • body lotion — “I have lizard legs!” A Clinique retractable blush and brush combo — “I love closed items and things that are compact.” She always carries under eye concealer and her Juicy Couture Eau de Parfum Roll-On. “Rollerballs are the best. I’ve had this one for a year and it’s still not empty,” said Frankel.
  • When it comes to indulgences? “I love baths! I still take them by myself, but also with Bryn. And I still do facials — you know, hardcore ones that excavate. They should play ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ while it’s happening. And I still love deep-tissue massages, because I find that my back is never straight.”
  • Frankel only suds up her hair 2 or 3 times a week and gets inexpensive blowouts that last.
  • She forgoes polish most of the time and gets clear mani and pedis because she hates chipping.
Stacie Turner, Real Housewives of DC
Turner recently sat down with Essence magazine and revealed some of her beauty favorites:
Lips: Turner creates a fab bronze gloss with MAC lipgloss in Meltdown, and Laura Mercier Lipgloss in Bronze.
Skin: She never leaves home without blotting papers!
Hair: Her mane man is  Bruce Johnson at the Avatar Salon in Silver Spring, MD.
Lisa Wu Hartwell, Real Housewives of Atlanta

Wu told Sophisticate’s Black Hair Styles and Care Guide her hair secrets:
“My best hair tip… For long, healthy hair keep the heat off it. During filming, we used a lot of heat on my hair and I can tell the difference in my hair and the curl pattern. I’m giving it a rest now and letting it air-dry as much as possible instead or blow-drying and using a ceramic iron on it. I’ve been really paying attention to my hair.
My hair philosophy… My hair is naturally curly so it takes me a little bit to get the wave pattern out of my hair so I have to have someone else straighten it.
My must-haves… I fluctuate a lot with hair products between when I wear my hair sleek I use a lot of straightening agents so I won’t frizz up. When I wear my natural curls, I’ll use Herbal Essences Totally Twisted products.”
