If I only had a nickel for the number of times people have asked me, “Are you wearing fake eyelashes?” I’d be…well, you know but I’m finally ready to share my secret to naturally long lush lashes!
The secret lies in the tools you use and the steps you take. My eye lash routine that I follow religiously everyday, must be performed in the proper order to get the most potential out of your lash.
I always work on my lashes as one of the very last steps in my makeup routine, definitely after applying all eyeshadow and liner.
Start with an eyelash curler, the ultimate beauty product I cannot live without! Most can be purchased at your local pharmacy and I honestly prefer a cheaper option. No need for extra bells and whistles just the standard sleek metal eyelash curler with padding along the rim works best. I have even found great prices for the same type of eyelash curler at Forever 21 for $2.80 that come in vibrant colors, with rhinestone detailing that will certainly add pizazz to your makeup bag. Now take your fabulous yet affordable eyelash curler and curl the top lashes by placing the curler over a closed eye letting the lashes come all the way through the opening in the curler. Then make sure to open the eye floating the lashes up before pressing down on the curler. The closer you can get to the lash line the better, although too close will give a slight pitch so be careful!
Once your dry lashes are prepped and standing a little taller than before its time for Mascara. I always use Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara and having tried quite a few in the past that claim to add volume, I without a doubt come back to my old reliable pink and green bottle. My favorite is ‘Very Black.’ I start with the bottom lashes, and I do sometimes opt for a chunkier wand at times, for lower lashes only, where I’ll reach for Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Volumizing Mascara. I like to paint the bottom lashes downward letting it hit the inner eyeline a little to give some more punch to my eyeliner. I like to also flip the mascara wand vertically continuing in that same painting downward motion. However watch to make sure there is not a huge glob on the end of the wand before doing so.
Head to the top lashes with your Maybelline Great Lash Mascara and paint upward holding the wand horizontally while blinking the eye over the wand throughout the application. I find it distributes the color better and makes my lashes grow longer.
After both eyes are done with mascara, I like to apply my lip color. I do this to give my mascara time to dry before completing the last and final step. If you wanna throw getting dressed or packing your makeup up before the last step, even better. We want to truly ensure the mascara has dried before going back to it. If you go back too soon, the mascara will stain on top of your eyeshadow. If so, however not the end of the world you can always cover over with extra shadow.
Now, the most important of all the steps! Take the eyelash curler back to the lid and repeat the curl we did on the dry lashes. This time hold down the curler for a count of 3, keeping the eyes wide open as you curl to lock it in. I compare the mascara to hairspray and the curler is giving that extra styling to keep the look in place. You’ll notice after this step, your lashes are standing up at full attention and everyone will want to know how you got those extra long lashes.
I believe a great long lush lash can go a ‘long long’ way. It opens up your eyes and adds that femininity we should all flaunt. So now you know my secret any tips you have for making your lashes pop? Tell us!
