Out With the Old, In With the New: 3 Bad Beauty Habits to Stop Today

Fall is around the corner and in honor of the new season, A Beauty Loft, in conjunction with Kotex, is revealing our old bad beauty habits! I’m revealing my top 3 beauty sins and how I kicked them.

Bad Beauty Habit #1: Sleeping with makeup. It’s something my mother always told me to do and unlike her obsession with buying me velvet every Christmas (“Velvet is in this year!”)- she was right on target. But by the time I dragged myself to bed, I was too exhausted to be bothered with washing my face. My older sister can pass as my younger sister and the only skin care regimen she’s been religious about since a teenager is washing her face every night. Idris Elba could be waiting in her room for her and she would still wash her face first.

The Fix: I got an electric face brush. Not only did I get one, but I’m obsessed with it to the point where I look forward to using it 2x a day. And guess what—I barely ever break out these days and my skin looks great.

Bad Beauty Habit #2: Hair abuse. I’ve done everything to my hair. It’s been relaxed, colored blonde, blue black, brown and then back to blonde.  Blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, extensions—the list goes on. I love the changing my hair, but it comes with a price. It has been damaged with split ends, fried with heat appliances, and has even fallen out from bleach.

The Fix: It took me awhile to figure out that my hair looks its best the less I do with it. I keep it one color (not my natural one…not sure that will ever re-appear), wash only every 3 days with a non-sulfate shampoo, and trim my hair every 2 months. My hair is easier to manage, less frizz, and full again since I’ve been gentler to my locks.  You know your on the right track when strangers ask you “Who does your hair?”

Bad Beauty Habit #3: Smoking. It started in college with clove cigarettes. I never considered it as really smoking…it was a social thing with cocktails. They had a sweet taste to them and an exotic scent that was always a conversation starter. Problem is, they weren’t available at the corner store, and if I didn’t have any, I would just bum a cigarette. Fast forward 10 years later, and I was up to a 1/2 pack a day. The health benefits were always a concern, but once I noticed the physical effects of smoking, it was extra motivation to quit. The biggest change I noticed? My skin. It was dull and unhealthy looking.

The Fix:  It’s been 2 months now since I quit using the patch and good old will power. My healthy (and youthful!) glow has already started to return. This isn’t the first time I quit, but I think it’s the last!

I loved this article! It was relatable and I learned a lot. I dye my hair as well. I also used to eye it and straighten it a ton. Now I dye it the color I like probably every 3 months, only straighten it maybe once a week, and only shampoo ever 2 to 3 days.
