I escaped relatively stretch mark free during my first pregnancy 11 years ago, so I’m determined this time around to do the same. While stretch marks are mostly hereditary, gaining weight at a steady pace and keeping moisturized can help.
There are a lot of pricey stretch mark creams on the market today, but I decided to try an all natural route and followed a recipe I found on supermodel Molly Sims blog. Sims swore by this belly butter that she got from Lori Bregman’s no stretch diet.
I found all the ingredients at Whole Foods and it cost me about $40—but it yields a lot. Enough to last you through the whole pregnancy. Once I figured out that you can actually boil the items in the container it was pretty easy to make. It keeps my skin extremely soft and moisturized. So far no stretch marks!
Breggy’s Belly Butter (from Molly’s blog)
1 jar of organic coconut oil
1 container of organic cocoa butter
1 container of organic Shea butter
1 small bottle of 400 IU of Vitamin E
Place all ingredients except for the Vitamin E in a pot of boiling water in their separate containers, letting them melt (the cocoa butter will take the longest). After everything is melted, pour into a large bowl and mix together with the Vitamin E. Put the mixture in a glass container and store in the refrigerator or another cool place. *note that the Vitamin E doesn’t dissolve completely.
Use the butter sparingly on belly, breasts, hips and buttocks.
