Drugstore Discovery: Volum’ Express the Mega Plush Mascara

26.6.12

After scraping the tube edges of my Maybelline Volum’ Express the Falsies Flared mascara for about a week, I headed to CVS to re-stock. But of course, a quick trip into the beauty section is never quick. I noticed the stand for Maybelline’s new Volum’ Express the Mega Plush Mascara and paused for a few minutes. Gel-mousse mascara (what’s that? Sounds like I need it, right?), but it claimed to never leave lashes brittle or flaky. Sounds great to me!

Immediately I started making a mental check list of the pros and cons of trying out this intriguing new mascara. Love the Falsies–why not stick with what works? But if I loved the Volum’ Express line already, chances are I would like the Mega Plush, right?

In the end I remembered I’m a beauty blogger and it’s my sworn duty to experiment with new products—I take the oath quite seriously (or it’s just my excuse to by a ton of products)–and bought it.

The verdict:Love it! Delivers a lot of lashes (and long lashes) in each swipe. And as promised, no flaking. I can’t tell if I like it better than the Falsies, but it performs just as well. I’m sensing a lash off. At around $7, you can’t beat the price either!

Flexible mascara wand!

Extra tip I learned from my friend and makeup artist, Carie Brescia: For really dramatic lashes, after applying either the Falsies or the Mega Plus, follow up with a coat of Maybelline’s Illegal Lengths mascara.

The Sun Has Arrived! Stay Protected and Beautiful

30.4.12

As the sun starts to show his beautiful face longer and brighter in these warmer months, so should we! Sunshine provides the body with essential vitamin D, but there is a way to spend time in the sun and get your vitamin D safely. Wear sunscreen! We have compiled a list of our favorite sunscreens, some are tinted, some oil-free, and some for your lips, take your pick!

1) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free. This tinted moisturizer has SPF20 and comes in 10 different shades. Tinted moisturizer is the perfect way to stay protected against the sun, but not give up your foundation. Tinted moisturizer is also a great product to use if you simply need to balance out your skin tone and do not need the coverage of a full foundation. Suggested retail: $42 at Sephora.com.

2)  La Roche-Posay La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Face Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. This one of the very few sunscreens I have found that leaves a matte finish and does not contribute to oil production on the face. With an SPF 60, this sunscreen is ideal for full sun exposure and can be applied under your makeup. Suggested retail: $29.95 at CVS.com.

3) Dr. Jart + Premium Beauty Balm SPF45 PA+++. A Beauty Balm is a moisturizer, brightener, primer, and treatment serum that is full of antioxidant bio-peptides. Over time, this BB cream will also increase the skin’s firmness and help achieve a more even complexion. This is basically a home run, all-in-one product. Not only does it do all of these wonderful things for you skin, but it’s also a broad spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen. Incredible! Suggested retail:$39 at Sephora.com.

4) Baby Blanket Tender Scalps Spray. Don’t forget your head! I fix my hair way off to the side with a very prominent part. If  you’re like me, your part is the perfect and unexpected place for sun damage to occur! Now, you don’t have to sacrifice you fresh blow out because you have a play date in the park on a sunny afternoon! Protect your scalp by using a sunscreen spray made specifically for hair and scalp. This sunscreen has broad spectrum SPF 45, is super gentle (it’s made for babies’ heads!) and the bottle is small enough to keep in your purse. Suggested retail: $5.99 at ToysRUs.com.

5) Banana Boat Sport Performance Lip Balm SPF 50. The lips are the most sensitive spot on the face and also one of the spots most prone to sunburn because we don’t typically think to put sunscreen on our lips. This lip balm is a broad spectrum SPF 50 and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes (don’t forget to reapply). The best part? It tastes like lip balm, not sunscreen! Suggested retail: $2.79 at Drugstore.com.

The sun is here so get out and enjoy it! First, protect your beautiful skin so it will stay that way. I hope you find these options useful and please remember to get to your dermatologist to ‘get your spots checked’ every year (source: skincancer.org).

Eight of Our Favorite Makeup Products Switched to Low Cost Alternatives

11.4.12

P1050186 copy 528x294 Eight of Our Favorite Makeup Products Switched to Low Cost Alternatives

When we finally find that one product that does exactly what we need it to or want it to, it’s a really big deal! However, when that product comes with a hefty price tag, it makes us slightly less eager to buy more of it. We have found low cost substitutes for some of our favorite high end products and we are sure you will love them just the same as their counterparts!

OriginalBobbi Brown The Basic Brush Collection ($175 at bloomingdales.com). Bobbi Brown is a powerhouse in the makeup industry, so naturally her makeup brushes are incredibly popular. Her brushes preform well, withstand the test of time and come in many different shapes and sizes.

Substitute: Sigma Beauty Brushes Make Me Classy Travel Kit ($59 at sigmabeauty.com). Sigma Beauty is quickly becoming known for their quality brushes and excellent customer care. They offer synthetic and natural bristle brushes in an array of colors and styles. The Make Me Classy Travel Kit has comparable brushes to the Bobbi Brown Basic Brush Collection, but are over $100 cheaper. I recently stocked my kit with over a dozen of these brushes and found that they stand up through the wear and tare better then some of my pricier brushes.

Original:  MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolor in Lasting Lust ($22 at maccosmetics.com). These last a really long time and come in seriously saturated colors, but in total honesty, their substitute lasts longer!

Substitute: Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Lipcolor in Keep Up The Flame ($7.99 at CVS.com). This lip color stands by its name! I have actually had to scrub this off my lips before bed because it just holds that well. 24 hours? Yes!

OriginalMake Up For Ever Pure Pigments ($20 at sephora.com). Pigments are fantastic for stand out looks, color correction or for tweaking our favorite shades. Often, pigments are too expensive for the typical consumer to feel comfortable buying multiple shades to be creative with.

Substitute: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pure Cosmetic Pigments ($12 at occmakeup.com). OCC has created pigments that are just as pigmented as the higher priced lines, but at a more attainable price tag. At $12, you can feel comfortable trying that bright teal liner or hot pink lip!

OriginalMake Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette ($38 at Sephora.com). These concealers/color correctors are a necessity when you have a red blemish, dark circles or your skin is a little lackluster. Apply them under foundation for any color correction.

SubstituteMehron ProColoRing Neutralizer ($14.95 at Mehron.com). The Mehron color wheel serves the same purpose as the Make Up For Ever Concealers, but at less then half the cost. Mehron is a loved makeup line amongst Makeup Artists and their products stand the test of time.

OriginalAnastasia Brow Pen- Long Wearing Brow Tint ($21 at Sephora.com). The name Anastasia and brows go hand-in-hand. The brow pen offers the application of a pencil and longevity of a liquid liner. The tip is so fine, it is possible to create the illusion of tiny hairs within your brows.

Substitute: NYX Eyebrow Marker ($9.75 at NYXcosmetics.com). This brow marker comes in two shades and gives the Anastasia Brow Pen a serious run for its money. The tip is equally as fine and the formula last just as long.

OriginalNARS Eyeshadow in Etrusque Limited Edition ($24 at NARScosmetics.com). When NARS came out with their Limited Edition Etrusque Shadow, I was in love (so were many others, it is very hard to find)! It is the perfect gold for every skin tone.

Substitute: La Femme Eyeshadow in Gold ($2.99 at camerareadycosmetics.com). The La Femme Gold Shadow is the identical twin of the NARS Etrusque. The texture is just as creamy and smooth and the pigmentation is equally as intense.

OriginalMake Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder ($32 at sephora.com). Finding a quality setting powder is essential for keeping your makeup in place past your lunch break and Make Up For Ever has done just that. This powder is easily the best selling HD Setting Powder on the market and with reason. When brushed over a finished face, the Make Up For Ever HD Powder will keep you without shine for hours and your products just where you place them.

Substitute: Eyes Lips Face Studio High Definition Powder ($6 at eyeslipsface.com). This powder serves the same purpose, has the same texture and applies the same way, but you can buy 5 of them for the price of 1 Make Up For Ever HD Powder.

OriginalNARS Angelika Blush ($28 at bloomingdales.com). NARS blushes are cult favorites. The pigmentation and longevity make them a well stocked must-have for our makeup bags. A favorite, Angelika, offers a soft bubblegum/innocent pink that is suitable on nearly all skin tones.

Substitute: Eyes Lips Face (ELF)’s Tickled Pink ($3 at eyeslipsface.com). This blush is almost identical to the Angelika and comes with a three dollar price tag! The size is comparable and the price difference is astounding.

Quality makeup is important and often expensive, but once in a while we can find lower priced items that preform just as well! This season, save a little money on your old favorites and reward yourself with some colorful new products. Happy Spring Beauties!

Give Me 5 Minutes! The Perfect 5 Minute Face

15.2.12

So you only have 5 minutes to do your makeup? No problem! I will show you what exact products you need and how to apply them. Give yourself 5 minutes to amp up your morning routine and feel fabulous before you take on the day.

The products:

1. Primer. I recommend the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15. Available at Barneys and Sephora. Suggested Retail: $52.

2. Tinted moisturizer or foundation, depending on the level of coverage you need. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free (Available at Macy’s or Sephora. Suggested Retail: $42) or Makeup Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation (Available at Sephora or at Makeup Forever Boutique. Suggested Retail: $40) if you need a bit more coverage then a tinted moisturizer gives.

3. Concealer. Chose a concealer that has a peachy/orange or yellow undertones to cover dark circles. Benefit Boi-ing (Available at Benefit Cosmetics or at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $19) or Eve Pearl Dual Salmon Concealer & Treatment (Available at Eve Pearl. Suggested Retail: $37)  for under eye and Makeup Forever 5 Camoflage Cream Palette (Available at Sephora or any Makeup Forever Boutique. Suggested Retail: $36) for the face.

4. Cream blush. Tarte Cheek Stain in whatever color you enjoy! I love Blissful or Natural Beauty. Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $30.

5. Setting powder. Makeup Forever HD Microfinish Powder (Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $30) or Trish McEvoy Translucent Finishing Powder (Available at Bloomingdales. Suggested retail: $38).

6. An eyeliner to compliment your eye color. Blue eyes: Pick one that has copper/bronze undertones with a slight iridescence like Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes in Pearly Brown 2L or Bronze 10L. Green eyes: pick a brown with a purple undertone like Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes in Shimmering Plum 4L. Brown eyes: Pick a navy/grey shade like M·A·C In The Groove Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Navy Stain. Makeup Forever Liners available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $18. MAC Liner available at Bloomingdales. Suggested Retail: $15.

7. Lash curler. I recommend Revlon Extra Curl lash Curler. Available at CVS. Suggested Retail: $6.99.

8. Waterproof or water resistant mascara. I love Too Faced Lash Injection (Available at Sephora. Suggested retail: $21) or Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof (Available at CVS. Suggested Retail: $5.29).

The Steps:

1. Apply primer over entire face.

2. Apply tinted moisturizer/foundation to entire face. Use a round stiff brush and apply in a circular motion until blended.

3. Apply concealer under eyes (use the eye concealer for this only), on the sides of your nose, sides of your mouth and cupid’s bow (that area where your lips form a ‘V’ on your top lip). Blend with your ring finger (it applies the perfect amount of pressure).

4. Apply cream blush to cheekbones, lips (yes, lips!) and to your eyelids (with your ring finger, like above). Blend.

5. With a powder brush, apply your chosen setting powder.

6. Run your chosen liner along your upper water line. This is the smooth surface under your upper lashes. This will take some practice! Then extend the liner up into your lash line. With your finger, smudge slightly to buff out the rough line of the liner.

7. Curl lashes by clamping down at the base and then intermittently ‘pump’ down the lash towards the tip.

8. Apply chosen mascara. DONE!

The first few times you do this, it may take more like 10 minutes, but once you are comfortable, you will be able to do it in under 5 minutes- I swear! Enjoy!
