Interview with Famed Makeup Artist Troy Jensen

There is no doubt that when you look at stars like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, and Elle Macpherson you see beautifully poised women, but what you also see is often the work of famed Makeup Artist Troy Jensen. He has been working in the industry for 26 years and in his words, “I came here with a dream and nothing else. I thank God I ended up how I did.” He tells me the story of how he arrived at his first makeup job with a paper bag full of Revlon products (he still has a soft spot for Revlon) and thought: “What am I doing? I have no business being here.” He knew he had something that set him apart: a love for his craft and the knowledge that he was just genetically programed to make women beautiful with a makeup brush. Based on his portfolio, plethora of magazine covers and high profile clients, the years of hard work and determination are paying off.

To start the interview, I ask Troy what he is currently doing and what he has coming up. He tells me that he is currently on a short lunch break on set and has budgeted this time to speak with me. I get butterflies because it hits me – I am speaking to an incredibly talented man who has reached a level of success I can only dream of. He tells me of his excitement for the entrance of fall because this is the time that Makeup Artists find most of their inspiration and are trying new trends.

“All makeup trends start on the runway, make their way to the red carpet, and are finally solidified by the average consumer – the women wearing them and owning them daily.”

He tells us of his new adventures coming up: his collaboration with and love of a new brand called Sindulge (sindulge.com), a cruelty free makeup line that has highly pigmented formulas that perform perfectly. Troy will soon be doing tutorials and offering tips with the line, so stay tuned to their site and www.troyjensen.com.

“If I could fill my kit with only products that were cruelty free, I would. How great is it to be using products on clients and know that they weren’t produced in undesirable circumstances? Stay tuned because as I discover it, I will share it.”

One trend Troy is really loving is the Bordeaux lip. Many of us have seen it but are often too intimidated to try it. Troy’s tip to make this deep, sexy color wearable and easy to apply? Your finger! Apply the color with your finger (not from the tube) and smudge it into the lips rather then applying it on top of the lips. Follow with a clear gloss. There is no hard line (read: lip liner) and no worrying about your hair getting caught in the color and smudging it all over your face. Yes, we have all been there. For a look with just one step, swipe on Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Black Tie Plum.

Another loved trick of Troy’s is to apply an illuminating product like Benefit’s Whatts Up in specified spots to achieve the look of an inner glow. Apply it down the center of the nose, on the inner corners of the eyes, the cupids bow on the upper lip, just above the cheekbones, along the ridge of the jawline, on the clavicle bone, the shoulders, and down seem of the legs. This can be applied under foundation, on top or both. The effect is glowing skin that doesn’t look shiny or overdone. Troy has filmed a really fun and charismatic video with Benefit for their illuminating products, see it here.

Troy’s most loved makeup technique is something he calls “The Troy Jensen Smokey Flair” which is basically a fool proof way to get a smokey eye with a sex-kitten edge. He breaks down the steps for us:

  1. Curl your lashes.
  2. Line the upper lid with a brown/bronze pencil then smudge it a bit.
  3. Using a dampened small, soft, and narrow brush to apply bronze/brown shimmery shadow over the line.
  4. Use the brush to extend the line to the thickness and length (winged, cat-eye, etc.) you want.
  5. Apply lots of black mascara, at least two coats.
  6. Draw a thin line very close to the lashes with a black liquid liner.
  7. Using your brush, blend it all together.

He tells me of how he has one room in his house dedicated to just makeup, but that it has found its way into each and every other room as well. “It’s in every room of my house! Sometimes I get overwhelmed by it all and think ‘I’m going to get rid of the stuff I don’t use’, but I just cannot part with it. What if I do want to use it? Makeup is like my baby, I am attached” he says. He then talks about how refreshed he feels after a recent return from a two year break:

“I’m starting over, that’s amazing. I’m walking back in with bright eyes and professionalism. Waiting for that opportunity that I can say ‘bam here I am’”.

I think it is pretty safe to say that Troy Jensen has solidified his name in the beauty industry, yet he remains humble, open, eager and passionate about his craft. His humility is shown when I ask him who his favorite celebrity to work with is and he responds with, “I appreciate every face I work on. It’s all rich. Every person brings something special. Some make me laugh, some are sweet, they are all incredible. I am going to be 47 this week (October 6th. Ahem, Twitter: @itstroyjensen and Facebook: troyjensenbeauty, birthday wishes!) and I am still in awe of my job and my clients.

We ask him for some advice for fellow Makeup Artists out there trying to succeed and he says, “Beauty is life. We’re effecting people! Listen to your client and listen to yourself. What you achieve belongs to you and is yours, no one can take it away”.

Please follow Troy on Twitter and ‘like’ him on Facebook! It was a pleasure interviewing such a joyous and kind man. Troy is a true gem and we are honored to have had the opportunity to speak with him.

Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

08.8.12

Celebrity hairstylist artist Mara Roszak created Kate Beckinsale’s look for the Total Recall premiere in Los Angeles. Taking inspiration from Kate’s structured dress, Roszak created a texturized look for the red carpet. Roszak described Kate’s look as “edgy and undone, with an effortless feel.”

Get Kate’s hair in three simple steps:

Prep and Texturize- Achieving the undone quality of Kate’s hair relies on creating texture while preventing flyaways. Start by evenly applying John Frieda Frizz-Ease Curl Reviver Styling Mousse ($5.99 at drugstores) through towel-dried hair to tame frizz, boost shine and build texture. For added volume, spray roots with a texturizing spray and rough dry.

Secure the Style- Next, twist small sections of hair to create tousled texture. Once hair is completely dry, gently tease the crown for a bit of height. Next, pull hair back create a loose braid. Tuck the ends under and pin in place with bobby pins, crossing the pins to secure the look and make sure the braid stays in place. Allow pieces in the front to fall out and frame the face.

Polish and Perfect- To finish the look, spray John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hair Spray ($5.99 at drugstores) on your fingertips and pinch sections while rubbing your fingers together on the hair to add more texture and break up the look. Then in an even, all-around motion, mist a thin coat of hair spray to set the look.

After your hair is perfectly set using Rozak’s steps, use my steps to get her makeup look as well:

Using a liquid foundation like Make Up For Ever’s Face and Body ($40 at Sephora), apply foundation with a damp sponge, I love the Beauty Blender ($19.95 at Sephora), all over the face.

Untitled Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier Untitled 13 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Apply a cream blush to the apples and/or cheekbones like NARS The Multiple ($39 at Sephora) in shade Orgasm. Blend the color well with the sponge.

Untitled 2 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Apply a cream shadow in a cool shimmer gray, like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream ($23 at Sephora) color 2 Steel, from the lashes to just below the crease with a flat shadow brush like Sigma’s E55 ($9 at SigmaBeauty.com).

Untitled 3 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier Untitled 4 e1344443885744 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

With a clean blending brush, like Sigma’s E40 ($11 at SigmaBeauty.com) blend the crease so there is a soft fade of color just above the crease.

Using a liner/pencil brush like Sigma’s E30 ($9 at SigmaBeauty.com), pull this color up beyond the lashes to create a ‘winged’ or cat eye shape. The idea is to create this shape with the shadow alone and not a hard liner.

Untitled 6 e1344443982918 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Use a black liner with a metallic inflection like the Sephora Collection Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in 09 Glitter Black ($12 at Sephora). The black will provide a hard line and contrast against the gray, while the shimmer will reflect light.

Untitled 7 e1344444030321 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Apply the cream shadow within the lower lashes with the liner/pencil brush from previous step.

Line the lower water line with a bronze pencil like the Lorac Eye Shadow/Liner in shade Paparazzi ($18 at Sephora). This also follows the shimmer effect with silver metallic inflections.

Untitled 8 e1344444083951 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Apply a deep black mascara like Rimmel’s ScandalEyes in 003 Extreme Black ($6.99 at Ulta).

Untitled 9 e1344444138603 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Because the emphasis is on the eyes, the lips were kept neutral by sweeping a light gloss over the lips. Try Revlon ColorBurst Lipgloss in Crystal Lilac ($7.49 at Ulta).

Untitled 10 Get Kate Beckinsale’s Hair and Makeup for the Total Recall Premier

Set the t-zone with a powder like Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder ($26 at Sephora) using a large powder brush like Sigma’s F30 ($19 at SigmaBeauty.com).

Bold. Breathtaking. Seductive.

These are the adjectives used to describe the new Fall 2012 Color Collection, now available from NARS!

**With brand new product names like, “Undress Me,” for their shimmery multi-purpose highlighter stick, the racy description fits. This ballerina pink highlighter with silver shimmer can be used on eyes, face, lips and body and was recognized by InStyle as the ‘Best Overall Highlighter’ noted as “mistake-proof color, quick and easy to apply.”

You’ll also find in the new collection, deep rich eyeshadow shades in their ‘High Society’ trio featuring Lavender, Matte Forest Green, and Irridescent Amethyst.

** Or if you’re looking to edge up your look this Fall, pick up their New Wave Eye Palette, with 6 vibrant eyeshadows in violet, chartreuse, electric blue, and black.

** I’ll be looking to treat myself to their new lip colors in ‘Autumn Leaves,’ sheer lipstick and ‘Rouge Tribal,’ lip gloss. I love a great red shade and it seems Autumn Leaves will give you a sheer, long lasting natural tint that I recommend topping off with a gloss like Rouge Tribal for a high impact shine. I always say a little gloss can go a long way for your sex appeal.

So many new products, so little time! I foresee polish like Storm Bird, taking over the nail trend for Fall. At Summer’s end I’m usually ready to trade in the fun neon shades for something more subdued. The gray shade should go nicely with my fading tan. Pickup all the latest products at Sephora, its never too early to prep your Fall makeup bag.

Video Tutorial: How-to Apply False Lashes

27.7.12

I want to let you in on a little secret! When you see celebrities walking down the red carpet and think ‘ugh, I wish I had lashes like that’. Well, they don’t even have lashes like that!

I would be willing to bet that over 95% of the women we see on red carpets are getting a little help in the lashes department!

Now, you can follow our step-by-step and learn how to easily apply strip lashes in no time flat. I know, it’s a little overwhelming if you have never done it before, but with a few tricks of the trade, it can be done simply.

In this tutorial I use:

Lashes Application Snap SHot Video Tutorial: How to Apply False Lashes

False lashes can add an ‘oomph’ to your look that no amount of eyeliner or mascara can, so don’t be afraid! Set some time aside and practice practice practice. Also, it is 100% normal to ‘feel’ the lashes for the first 15-20 minutes you wear them, but it should not hurt and that feeling should go away. This is just your eyes adjusting to the weight of the lashes.

Please tune into the A BEAUTY LOFT YOUTUBE CHANNEL and check out our first weekly segment, but also browse around at some of our others!
