March Beauty Product Favorites

27.3.15

Elizabeth and James, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brush #12, Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eyeliner, Beauty Blender Mini

I can’t believe it’s the end of March already, but I’m ready for spring. My Sephora haul this month yielded some goodies I would definitely repurchase.

First up is Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon. I typically use gel eyeliners with an angled brush because I feel like it’s more precise than a pencil, but easier to apply than liquid. This eyeliner combines the precision of a gel with the ease of a pencil. It’s similar to Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner, without the eye irritation I experienced with that pencil.

I also got to try Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black, which I ended up loving. It’s spicy and sensual, masculine, yet feminine. I couldn’t stop smelling my clothes when I wore it and immediately got a compliment from the hubs on it. Score.

I love using a Beauty Blender to apply my makeup for a natural and flawless finish. The Beauty Blender Micro Mini is perfect for concealer and small areas of the face!

It’s no secret I love my Clarisonic for night time cleansing. I’ve been using the new Radiance replacement head and I love how gentle it is but makes my skin smooth and glowing.

Last but not least is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brush #12. I don’t know how I lived without it. It’s perfect for defining and filling in brows, especially using the Dipbrow Pomade (which I love). On the other end is a spool for grooming.

Winter Proofing Hair With Head & Shoulders Moisture Care Collection

25.2.15

Head & Shoulders Moisture Care, co-wash, 2-in-1

It’s official. The groundhog saw his shadow and graced us with 6 more unwanted weeks of winter. That means 6 more weeks of delayed school openings, canceled dinner plans, and puffy coats and snow boots covered with that annoying film on dirty snow covered cars. Bleh.

It also means 6 more weeks of dry hair and scalp. The winter weather and dry indoor heating can wreck havoc on hair, especially ethnic hair, making it brittle and dry, thus more susceptible to split ends and dandruff.

The solution? Moisture. Moisture. And moisture. That’s why I was excited to try Head & Shoulders new line of hair care specifically formulated for textured hair. The Head & Shoulders Moisture Care Collection includes a shampoo, 2-in-1, co-wash and scalp soother.

The co-wash is great for when I wear my hair naturally curly. Co-washing, if you’re unsure of exactly what it is, is washing your hair with conditioner to ensure that dry/curly hair isn’t stripped of the precious oils it needs that washing with regular shampoo can cause.

Although my hair is naturally curly, in the winter I tend to wear it straight so the 2-in-1 wash is perfect for me. It contains vitamin E rich almond oil, coconut essence and dandruff-fighting ingredient zinc pyrithione (ZPT), which help combat the damage constant use of the hair dryer can cause. Before washing, I also used about 15 pumps of the scalp soother to cool and moisturize my scalp.

I had great results with the 2-in-1. I never thought that I could just use one product for washing and conditioning, but I could with this one. My hair was flat, limp, and dull beforehand, and afterwards my hair felt soft and smooth, but I still had great body and shine.

While I wish tomorrow I would be waking up to 75 degree weather instead of black ice warnings, good hair days help ease the pain. Thanks Head & Shoulders :)

HS_BlueHead and Shoulders scientists explored the unique needs and characteristics of African American hair and found a drastic need for moisture and protection. NARS Kicks Off 2015 With the NARSissist Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow Palette

14.1.15

NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow Palette, MAC Peachstock, Renee DeSantis, Philly Beauty Blogger, Beauty Blogger

I used Alabaster in the inner corner, Himalia on the lid, Ursa Major in the crease, and Subra in the outer corner

The eyeshadow palette game is vicious and competitive. NARS set the bar high early this year with their new NARSissit Dual-Intensity eyeshadow palette. I’ve been eyeing the Dual-Intensity eyeshadows for some time, but couldn’t decide on what color to buy (I could just hear my husband saying something about saving money, blah, blah), so this palette was the perfect opportunity to test out 8 shades.

The cover of the palette is a mirror–such a simple idea, but brilliant.

The shadows can be used wet or dry. The lighter colors I wasn’t thrilled with at first until I used them with a wet brush.  O.M.G. The pigment was absolutely amazing and the sheen was so pretty. The colors were easy to blend out as well.

It’s an amazing value for $79 (includes wet/dry brush).

Forever Young: The only 5 anti-aging tips you need to know

19.12.14

Underneath the glitz, glam, and makeup, good skin is the foundation of real beauty. Take care of it now and it will pay off in the future!

It’s my job to research and dig deeper to find out what really works when it comes to keeping a youthful appearance. So when Olay wanted to know what exactly my routine was to stay “Forever Young”, an impending birthday was the perfect soundboard to talk skin care.

It’s the birthday that puts you in a whole new age bracket. At the big 3-5, no longer will you be checking off the 28-34 box on surveys. No, you have new number friends like 36 and 37, with 40 only living a few doors down. And you’re really in for a rude awakening if you decide to have a baby at 35. You’re considered Advanced Maternal Age. The medical community must have not gotten the memo that 35 is the new 25.

While I’m convinced that J.Lo’s secret to never aging is the teardrops of magical purple unicorns that us mere mortals will never have access to, I’m determined to look like the best 35 year old me possible. Luckily, when 29 year old Renee was approaching another crushing monumental birthday,30, she had the good sense to start incorporating lifestyle changes that have paid off today.

These tips are tried and true and what I incorporate every day.

  • Drink water. A lot of water. I drink over ½ gallon a day. Yes, I have to pee several times a day, but my skin breaks out less and appears more supple and vibrant.
  • Wear sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. If I could tattoo one beauty tip on women (and men), that’s what it would be. Prolonged sun exposure to your skin causes wrinkles, sunspots, hyperpigmentation, and let’s not forget the #1 reason to wear sunscreen – skin cancer. Even I, as a woman of color, wear a Broadband SPF of at least 35 every day.
  • Remove your makeup every night. Not only do dermatologists recommend this but I’ve seen the results of this in real life. My *cough * older sister is a stickler for always washing her face at night and looks a decade younger. It’s from either that or she’s been sipping on J.Lo’s unicorn juice.
  • Start a skincare routine and stick with it. Yes, my night routine is an extra 10 minutes, but it’s worth it. I cleanse my face every night with a gentle cleanser, then apply an anti-aging serum…usually a retinol product, followed by a great moisturizer. Great skincare doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Olay’s Regenerist line is a steal for the low price. The Micro-Sculpting Cream has been giving me the softest skin and minimizing those fine lines.

Above all the superficial tips, the best thing to remember is that age really is just a number and to not live by previous rules or preconceived notions on how one should act at a certain age. Living life to its fullest surrounded by positivity is the best anti-aging tip!
