Think Pink! Our Favorite Pink Lip Colors this Season

We are in full swing Spring and Summer is quickly approaching. What better way to celebrate then with a bright pink lip? I have compiled some of my favorite ‘shock-you-pink’ products that are sure to convince you to leave behind your black polish and deep red lips!

1. Make Up For Ever Rouge Intense Lip Color in #36. This color is an intense, matte fuchsia. The thing I love about Make Up For Ever’s lip colors is that they last a very long time. I love to wear this shade with only mascara, it is the perfect contrast to the bright lip color. It’s bright! (Suggested retail: $19 at Sephora.com)

2. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Colour in L’Exuberante. There is just something about pulling out the Chanel Lipstick that makes me feel luxurious and put together. This is a muted shade of bubblegum pink and is much more wearable for the work environment then bright fuchsia. (Suggested retail: $32.50 at Bloomingdales.com)

3. Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color in Flamingo. This pink has a somewhat orange undertone and is an incredibly pungent color. This color will work really well for those with olive undertones, but is also really great for the blondes and brunettes with porcelain skin (a la Kristen Ritter or Michelle Williams). This is a powerful pink that pulls away from the bubblegum and hot pink spectrum enough to make it wearable for work. (Suggested retail: $48 at Bergdorfgoodman.com)

4.Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Crush. I walked into Sephora one day and saw a girl wearing this lipstick and absolutely had to have it. This color is simply described as: neon hot pink. So bright and so fun, but must be worn with a finished face. This is not the color you throw on when running out the door in the morning to add some color to you face. This is the color you put on for your birthday dinner or for brunch with your girlfriends. Amazing, saturated, fun and so so pink! (Suggested retail: $19 at Sephora.com)

5. Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Indulge. If you are a bit apprehensive to leave the house wearing an intense pink on you lips, but are still wanting to try the hot pink trend this season, try a lipgloss. This gloss is thick and pigmented enough to give your lips a hot pink tint, but is easily the most wearable of this bunch. (Suggested retail: $20 at Sephora.com)

Pink lips are the prefect way to freshen up your look this spring and I hope you have found my recommendations helpful. Now get out in the sun (wear sunscreen!), enjoy yourself and rock your hot pink lips!

Happy Spring Beauties!

Interview with Celebrity Makeup Artist and Cosmetics Line Creator: SONIA KASHUK!

We had the incredible honor of interviewing Sonia Kashuk! She is a renowned makeup artist, creator of the Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics line carried exclusively at Target, mother, and savvy business woman. Sonia let us in on some of her beauty secrets, told us about her motivations, favorite products, and many tricks of the trade!

A Beauty Loft: In your opinion, what is the most important quality of great makeup?

Sonia Kashuk: That it makes the woman look better. It has to be enhancing and doing something to help the woman feel and look better.

ABL: What are some budding trends for Spring/Summer 2012?

  • SK: Orange is the new black. Orange is a year round color that is a staple, but the emphasis is strong for this season. Orange has a new ‘seasonless’ quality and is being seen everywhere.

ABL:  How long have you been practicing makeup and what has been the hardest part of building your career?

  • SK: 30 years. The hardest part, in a weird way, is the more I know, the more I realize I don’t know. I am always learning.

ABL: What does your daily makeup routine consist of?

  • SK: It varies. I have different levels. It can be next to nothing in my office when I’m trying products. I’m a huge believer in foundation- a little goes a long way.  I also love blush for just a pop of color. I always do my brows and add mascara.

ABL: What is one beauty secret you have or use?

  • SK: Doing something to bring the eyes up. Seeing how you can play with makeup to turn your negatives into positives.

ABL: Can you tell us about what inspires you when creating new products for your Sonia Kashuk Cosmetics line?

  • SK: Women. How and what I can do so that my makeup is easy for them to use. I am my consumer. I use my knowledge of women and think about what we need.

ABL: Who is one person that is a great inspiration to you?

  • SK: Two people: My mother. She’s had 5 kids and is a wonderful person. She does so much. Also, my dear friend Cindy Crawford. She has worked very hard and I learn a lot through seeing her success.

ABL: When did you or when will you know you have found success in the beauty industry?

  • SK: Getting the CEW award was really an amazing experience for me. [In the fall of 2003, Sonia was presented with the prestigious Cosmetic Executive Woman Achiever Award in honor of her many accomplishments and unrelenting dedication. Source: SoniaKashuk.com] Success, I find, is when people talk to me about enjoying my products; the feedback from a woman who is happy.

ABL: What is your favorite makeup brush and what do you use it for?

  • SK: My Sonia Kashuk Small Multipurpose Powder Brush (Available at Target.com. Suggested Retail: $10.79). Touchups, powder, shadow, I use it for everything.

ABL: Can you offer one tip to women with problematic or acne prone skin?

  • SK: Try your best to use very little product on your skin. Leave it as clean as possible. Skincare is essential and only use color products on your face when you need it.

ABL: What is your secret for achieving the perfect red lip?

  • SK: Understanding that it shouldn’t be overly defined. The red lip is easier to wear today then it has been in the past. Use a finger and blur the edges of the lip line, that makes is softer and more easily attainable.

ABL: Finding the right shade of red can be very tricky, can you offer any tips on finding the right shade when considering blue-red vs. orange-red?

  • SK: This is what caused me to develop my cosmetics line! If you are shopping for a red lipstick, look for a brand that has one or two. Smaller brands will have one red that looks good on everybody. We have one red lip crayon and we have yet to find a woman it doesn’t look good on.

ABL: What challenges have you had to overcome by being a mother and a successful woman in the beauty industry?

  • SK: I’m a perfectionist and a control freak, but something has to give. It’s impossible to be good at everything. Some days I’m great as a mom, some days I’m great at work. I do the best I can do. It is hard because of my need to be on top of my game.

ABL: What is your favorite product from your line and why?

  • SK: I’m so passionate about what I do and my brand, but one product I am really proud of is my foundation. The skin looking flawless is so important and one of the hardest things to get a woman to love is foundation. Foundation makes a difference, but it is the hardest consumer attraction.

ABL: Do you ever have a hard time figuring out you own look or makeup routine?

  • SK: There are times I have been photographed and I see things that worked and times I see things that didn’t.  I recommend taking pictures of yourself to see how you look. Its a truer sense of how you actually look then looking in the mirror.

Final note: “To all the ABeautyLoft readers: Don’t ever discredit the power and quality of cosmetics found in the mass market. Be careful where you go. I have brought the quality of prestige [into the mass market] without the price.” -SONIA KASHUK

Sonia spoke with us with such humility and kindness; it was a true pleasure. It isn’t often that a woman who has achieved such success and notoriety is so down to earth and sweet. A giant ‘Thank You’ to Sonia for giving us the time for this interview. We will forever be fans and supporters! Below, you can find some products that are Sonia’s recommended favorites, as well as a few of our favorites! All Sonia Kashuk Products can be found at Target and Target.com.

The Kate Moss Lipstick Collection by Rimmel

Kate Moss. The woman who single handedly changed the image of models and and became the ‘anti-supermodel’ in the early 1990’s. She’s clearly a powerhouse when it comes to the beauty and fashion industry, so when she released her own line of lipsticks with Rimmel, we rushed to our local drugstore and swept them up.

The most important things lipstick must have are: longevity and pigmentation. Kate Moss Lipstick Collection by Rimmel has both.

I applied the colors to my arm for a swatch test and hours later, after many washes and scrubbing, there were still slightly visible lines of color. It just would not come off! When I applied them to my lips, the color lasted about 5+ hours without reapplication. I was very impressed.

The packaging is so sleek (would you expect anything else?) and the colors are very on trend with tangerines, purples and pale pinks. In addition to the intense pigmentation and chic black packaging, the lipsticks offer a pleasant fragrance. The smell is not overwhelming, but enough to give you a little pick-me-up when you apply.

Miss Moss has branched into the cosmetics industry with a bang by creating lipsticks that hold, are brilliantly colored, and make us look sleek when we pull that sexy black tube of lipstick out of our purse to apply. At just $4.99, we can feel at ease buying all five shades to keep in our makeup bags. The shades rage from a sexy neutral beige to a muted deep purple. There is at least one for every skin tone and look you are trying this season.

You can buy The Kate Moss Lipstick Collection by Rimmel at CVS.com for $4.99 (currently on sale for $3.99).

Spring Beauty Essentials to Get Your Face Brighter and Your Skin Glowing

We all are probably feeling a bit of spring fever as we anxiously await the warm weather that signifies we should put our winter coats away, but my favorite thing about spring is the makeup! COLOR! Spring is the time to shed winter skin and get colorful with new beauty products. I will break down the essentials to get your skin glowing and ready for spring.

We all need to punch up our color palette from the deep jewel tones of fall and winter. This spring season the trends are fluorescent colors, coral, and glowing complexions. Use a tinted moisturizer (with sunscreen, of course!) to let your skin peek through, add a bright coral to your lips, a warm peach to your cheeks and get your skin glowing with a luminizer. Here are the necessities to update your makeup routine for spring 2012:

1)  Tinted MoisturizerLaura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer (available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $42) is basically the reigning queen in this department. This tinted moisturizer has been the frontrunner for quite some time and there is a reason why- it stays where you put it and it moisturizes really well. NARS also makes a really fantastic tinted moisturizer, especially if you have a slight yellow undertone or have a red complexion you are looking to balance out with a yellow base. NARS Tinted Moisturizer is available in 9 shades and has SPF 30. Available at Bloomingdales. Suggested retail: $42.

2) Cheek Stain. Hourglass Aura Cheek Stains and Tarte Cheek Stains are fantastic, but a really great makeup artist tip is to take a lipstick and put it onto your cheeks! This is especially  significant after watching the Fall/Winter 2012 Fashion week in February, where we saw monochromatic cheeks and lips. For a modern look, take the lipstick you apply to your lips and smudge a bit onto your cheeks. I recommend the Tarte Cheek Stain in the color Tipsy (Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $30), a peach/coral with a slight white shimmer, that can also be used on the lips and eyes (we talk more about  this in our “Give Me 5 minutes! The Perfect 5 Minute Face” article). Hourglass has a similar color, Petal (Available at Barneys New York. Suggested retail $45), that is a peach/pink liquid and blends seamlessly into the skin.

3) Luminizer. I am huge fan of the Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in #13 Warm Beige (Available at Sephora. Suggested retail: $22). It comes in a pot and can be applied with your finger or a brush. Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightener is also a beautiful luminizer that comes with a slightly easier application with the brush on the end of the wand. To achieve the perfect glow, apply luminizer to the brow bone, cheekbones, and cupid’s bow.

4) Bright Lipstick. Try a coral lipstick (check out our previous article, ‘Crazy for Coral’) like Sonia Kashuk’s Vivid Coral (Available at Target Stores. Suggested Retail: $9.99) or Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Intense #38 Satin Coral (Availale at Sephora. Suggested retail: $19). You can also try Yves Saint Laurent’s Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain (Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $32) in 8 Orange De Chine (that’s tough to say!) for a stain that will last all through dinner and drinks without reapplying. Coral lipstick is a fresh take on the fall/winter red lip. A coral lip is meant to stand out and be the center of attention. So when you do a coral lip, keep the rest of your face soft and neutral.

The goal of springtime makeup is to liven up our skin and features with color and a warm glow. Just as we start to wear lighter weight fabrics, we should also lighten up our color palette and coverage. Think: bright and light! Enjoy, experiment with color and have fun with it.

Happy Spring! (Well, almost!)
