5 Drugstore Anti-Aging Products Everyone Over 30 (and Smart 20-Somethings) Should Have

Drugstore Anti Aging

There’s nothing like turning 30 to send a woman into mild to extreme hysteria. Without warning, cashiers are now calling you “ma’am” (seriously, how rude?) and songs of your prime, are now only played on the radio’s Old Skool At Noon set.

You now also want to try erase some of the skin sins you committed in your 20s…whether it was filled with smokey nights of binge drinking with little sleep or summer days basking in baby oil at the beach, the fine lines around your eyes don’t get any better from here!

Thanks to some voluntary (and involuntary) lifestyle changes, I can happily say my skin is even better now than it was in my 20s. Acne scars have faded, my breakouts are rare, and it generally looks healthier.

After reading the advice of dermatologists and skin care experts, the following list are some of my favorite anti-aging products—that can all be found at the drugstore:

  1.  Olay Pro X Advanced Cleansing System: I’ve tried both this cleansing brush and the more expensive Clarisonic and while there are differences, this is a great choice that’s easy on the wallet. It gets skin cleaner than just washing alone–thus preventing breakouts and making way for your products to work better.
  2. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 35: I know you’ve heard it 1,000x before, but daily sunscreen is the most effective measure in preventing the signs of aging, and more importantly protecting against skin cancer. This is a great daily moisturizer that is light weight and goes on smoothly under makeup.
  3. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser: This cleanser has a cult following for a reason. It cleanses without irritating and drying out the skin.
  4. Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub: Exfoliating is an important skin care step that people forget. Removing the dead skin cells makes way for new skin cells and softer, brighter skin.
  5. RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream:  Retinol is the Holy Grail of anti-aging.  As *we* (yes, you are included since you’re over 30 now) get older, our skin’s ability to renew itself slows down–thus causing wrinkles and sagging skin. This night formula is great because it’s not as harsh on the skin as prescription strength Retinol and fine lines are diminished over time with continued use.

Labor Day Special: End of Summer Big Beach Day Beauty Must Haves

Ocean City 2012

Welcome back, ABL readers! I hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of summer. I spent the last week down the Jersey shore for a little R & R (no fist pumping). It’s a yearly pilgrimage for my husband’s family filled with tons of family, friends, food (think broccoli rabe stromboli, ravioli, chicken cutlets, and about 100 cookies of assorted flavors..I gain weight just thinking about it) and long days at the beach.

With a young son, it’s hard to stay under an umbrella the whole time to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. However there were some great products that I used that really saved my skin from burning and irritation.

1.  SKIN AUTHORITY SUNSCREEN MOISTURIZER SPF 30, UVA-  Full spectrum coverage, but so lightweight and moisturizing on the skin. I re-applied each time I got out the water and is my favorite all over sunscreen by far! $10-42

2. INSTITUT ESTHEDERM OSMOCLEAN CALMING CLEANSING MILK- Perfect cleanser for skin that might be slightly sensitive after a day of sun exposure. $39

3. ULTRA SHEER LIQUID DAILY SUNBLOCK SPF 70-  Works great alone or under makeup! $11.49

4.  INSTITUT ESTHEDERM TAN ENHANCING BODY LOTION- Looking to extend your post vacation glow? This soothing lightweight lotion moisturizes and prolongs your tan. $62

 Happy Labor Day!!

Acne Busters!! Five Products for Acne Prone Skin.

Not all of us are blessed with flawless skin! If you’re like me, it seems like every product you try either does nothing to help your acne or makes it even worse. Well, there is hope out there! As a makeup artist, having clear skin is part of my job, so for the last year and a half I have made it my mission to test run dozens of products. Now, I’m here to report what I have found works!

1. DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask. Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $40. This stuff works like a vacuum and I swear I can feel it pulling the dirt from my pores! Apply it to a clean face, sit for 5-10 minutes, rinse off. It can be used 1-3 times per week and/or as a nightly spot treatment for blemishes.

2. Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Complexion Correction Pads. Available at Sephora. Suggested Retail: $36. This product has been instrumental in transforming my skin to the smooth, even, and blemish-free complexion I now have!  Nightly, after washing your face, wipe this pad all over face and effected areas.

3. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash. Available at CVS.  Suggested Retail: $6.29. This wash can be very drying if used too much, so I recommend using it only in the morning. In the evening, you will follow washing with topical treatments so I recommend a gentle wash like the Simple wash below.

4. Simple Refreshing Facial Wash Gel. Available at Target. Suggested Retail: $6.99.  This wash is gentle, fragrance free, oil free, doesn’t clog pores and cleanses really well. This is perfect way to cleanse the skin for the evening and prepare it for topical treatments.

5. La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. Available at La Roche-Posay and at CVS. Suggested Retail: $29.95. The perfect sunscreen! It is fairly inexpensive, does not cause breakouts (which happens often with sunscreen) and finishes with a nice matte finish. (I cannot say enough about the importance of daily sun protection!)

I thought it might give you a daily routine to run with (and change as you feel necessary) if I included mine. AM: Wash with Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash then apply La Roche-Posay sunscreen/moisturizer. PM: Wash with Simple facial wash then wipe a Peter Thomas Roth Complexion Correction pad all over my face, neck and chest. I also apply an eye cream. Finally, twice a week I apply the DDF mask.

My skin is the best it has ever been and I hope these products can help you to get there too!
